It is now cosmopolitan and part-gentrified. A young Horatio Nelson once stayed here as did John Keats, Mary Shelley and George Orwell. The artist Ford Madox Brown painted the view from his window in Fortess Road and the singer and political activist Paul Robeson lived in Highgate Road.
